Why Learning to Learn – Examples and Exercises

Learning to Learn

A student spends several years of his life studying, understanding and memorizing hundreds of lessons, but is there only one lesson that teaches you how to learn! when it’s the most important thing these days.

Why learn to learn! Because the amount of knowledge increases a lot, because we never stop learning in life, because we are more and more overwhelmed with documents and resources.

Why learn

Judge for yourselves: global data claim that the amount of knowledge doubles approximately every ten years.

Half of the data in technology is outdated after five years, and after eighteen months in computing! …

Nine tenths of the knowledge that students will have to master in their lifetime has not yet been produced when they are learning, so it is not taught to them.

These data show that it is  out of the question to be able to learn such a mass of knowledge , the programs being already well overloaded.

Examples and reasons

So if knowledge increases so quickly, here are the results we can have:

A person masters very little knowledge compared to the amount of knowledge or technological innovations that are produced each year, and even compared only to the necessary knowledge that should be able to be mobilized to live with our times.

Much of the knowledge we are learning now will not be used in the future.

The curricula taught in schools tend to be overtaken by the demands of contemporary culture.

And with all this, knowledge and study methods, to be able to fill in the gaps and adapt on your own, is not taught in school!…

The time of schooling cannot follow this incessant and rapid evolution, what is the solution and how to learn to learn?

Succeed alone

The most appropriate solution is therefore to learn to manage one’s knowledge by oneself, to know how to follow and understand the development of knowledge in the face of specific needs.

It is a way to avoid the deficit in adaptation to this world .

Because this renewal of data and knowledge, which we have just described, requires individuals who are constantly attentive and in a position to learn quickly.

Large volume of information

For this, the student must  acquire his own learning methods  and not rely on a teacher as the  current model is accustoming him to .

He must be able  to access the information alone, choose and select it, use it wisely or even judge its relevance and plausibility in relation to the problems encountered .

Thus, managing, optimizing one’s work process and choosing the best way to study become possible.

We understand why Romainville wrote that  ” The effective learner would therefore not necessarily be the one who has such and such a strategy but the one who exercises on his own ways of learning a reflection allowing him to adapt them “.

The psychologist H. Gerjuoy goes further by saying that  “The illiterate of tomorrow will not be the one who has not learned to read. It will be the one who has not learned to learn. »

Now that we understand  the why of the question . We still have to explain how to learn to learn well with effective exercises and methods.

Learn to teach students

One thing is still weird. A child or a student spends years learning and they are not taught how to do it ! Is this normal?

Do you see a mason start building a wall without having learned how to do it?

Do you see a teacher, a baker, a mechanic who has not learned his trade…

Not only do we not learn, but other elements are added to our ways of doing things

For example, when we say to a student:  “but think about it…” , have we told him what thinking is and how to think better?

It is not enough to urge others to do something, you have to define it to identify it and try to make them learn it.

We can therefore learn to learn, learn to think, learn to work better… And this learning is precious because it brings us closer to success .

Let’s say that it is as important, if not more, to have the right method than to spend hours of work without efficiency.

Exercises for learning to learn

Learning to build a wall allows us to build it better, learning to paint allows us to paint better, etc.

So learning to learn allows us to better understand and memorize a lesson!!

So why aren’t pupils and students taught how to successfully memorize and understand? Do we believe that this cannot be learned, that it is automatic

We leave them to fend for themselves, in the heap, often they are not aware that there is a method, techniques, exercises, they believe that you just have to spend hours reading and memorizing hundreds of pages and that’s all.

It has been observed that the strongest students are those who have an effective working method.
